The No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 (NCLB) was initially legislated for 5 years, and has been since temporarily extended, but not officially reauthorized. President George W. Bush signed it into law on January 8, 2002. The primary sponsors of NCLB were President George W. Bush and Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, a decades-long advocate for raising the quality of public education for all American children. NCLB was partially based on education reform strategies instituted by President Bush during his tenure as Texas governor. Those Texas education reforms were reputed to result in improved standardized test scores. Subsequent inquiry revealed test-rigging by some educators and administrators. Margaret Spellings, Former Secretary of Education One of the principal authors of NCLB was Margaret Spellings, who was nominated to Secretary of Education in late 2004. Spellings, who holds a B.A. in political science from University of Houston, was the political director for Bushs first gubernatorial campaign in 1994, and later served as a senior advisor to Texas Gov. Bush during his term as 1995 to 2000. Before her association with George W. Bush, Spellings worked on an education reform commission under Texas Governor William P. Clements and as associate executive director for the Texas Association of School Boards. Prior to her nomination to be Education Secretary, Margaret Spellings worked for the Bush Administration as Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. Margaret Spellings has never worked in a school system, and has no formal training in education. She is married to Robert Spellings, former Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the Texas House, now a prominent attorney in Austin, Texas and Washington D.C., who has actively lobbied for the adoption of school vouchers. Teaching to the Test Teachers and parents charge that NCLB encourages, and rewards, teaching children to score well on the test, rather than teaching with a primary goal of learning. As a result, teachers are pressured to teach a narrow set of test-taking skills and a test-limited range of knowledge. NCLB ignores many vital subjects, including science, history and foreign languages. Problems with NCLB Standardized Tests Since states set their own standards and write their own standardized NCLB tests, states can compensate for inadequate student performance by setting very low standards and making tests unusually easy. Many contend that testing requirements for disabled and limited-English proficient students are unfair and unworkable. Critics allege that standardized tests contain cultural biases, and that educational quality cant necessarily be evaluated by  objective testing. Teacher Qualification Standards NCLB sets very high teacher qualifications by requiring new  teachers  to possess one (or often more) college degrees in specific subjects and to pass a battery of proficiency tests. Existing teachers must also pass proficiency tests. Failure to Address Reasons for Lack of Achievement At its core, NCLB faults schools and curriculum for student failure, but critics claim that other factors are also to blame, including: class size, old and damaged school buildings, hunger and homelessness, and lack of health care. Where It Stands Theres little doubt that the  No Child Left Behind Act  will be reauthorized by Congress in 2007. The open question is: How will Congress change the Act? White House Kicks-Off Reauthorization Discussions A meeting was held on January 8, 2007 at the White House to mark the 5th anniversary of the No Child Left Behind Act, and to kick-off Bush Administration discussons with Congress regarding reauthorization of the act. Attendees at the meeting with President Bush and Education Secreatary Margaret Spellings were Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Chair of the Senate Education Committee; Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), ranking Republican on that committee; Rep. George Miller (D-CA), Chair of the House Education Committee; and Rep. Howard McKeon (R-CA), ranking Republican on that committee. According to Sen. Enzi,  There was agreement we should proceed, and an agreement in principal on what needs to be done. Religious, Civil Liberties Groups Propose NCLB Changes More than 100 religious denominations and  civil rights, education and disability advocacy groups have signed on to the  Joint Organizational Statement on NCLB, calling for changes to NCLB, and stating that: We endorse the use of an accountability system that helps ensure all children, including children of color, from low-income families, with disabilities, and of limited English proficiency, are prepared to be successful, participating members of our democracy... ... we believe the following significant, constructive corrections are among those necessary to make the Act fair and effective. Among these concerns are: * over-emphasizing standardized testing, narrowing curriculum and instruction to focus on test preparation rather than richer academic learning; * over-identifying schools in need of improvement; using  sanctions  that do not help improve schools; * inappropriately excluding low-scoring children in order to boost test results; * and inadequate funding. Overall, the laws emphasis needs to shift from applying sanctions for failing to raise test scores to holding states and localities accountable for making the systemic changes that improve student achievement.

Scott Fitzgerald, published in 1925 and set in the summer of 1922 in the fictional towns of East and West Egg in Long Island, New York. The story is about the young and perplexing millionaire Jay Gatsby, and his obsession to win back the only girl he’d ever loved, a Southern debutante the name of Daisy Buchanan. Some themes in the novel include dedication, destructiveness, wealth, social class, and the defiance to change. The main influence of the novel was the author himself, and many of the key events in the Great Gatsby were inspired by similar circumstances and situations in Fitzgerald’s life. F. Scott Fitzgerald was extremely similar to Gatsby (whose real name was James Gatz). Both were born in the Northern part of the American Midwest in small, rural towns. Both were raised in middle-class families. Fitzgerald attended Princeton University, but his slipping grades and constant partying forced him to drop out, and he ended up serving in WWI. Dickens plays around with language to give a clear image of pip’s imagination. ‘The shape of the letters on my fathers, gave me an odd idea that he was a square, stout, dark man, with curly black hair. From the character and turn of the inscription, Also Georgiana Wife of the above, I drew a childish conclusion that my mother was freckled and sickly’. The quote shows how pip imagines his parents from the lettering of their tombstones. In the first chapter Pip meets the convict. Is It Right Essay Everyone knows that Abortion is a very controversial subject in the United State. It discusses human interaction where ethics, emotions, and law come together. Everyone knows that babies die of natural causes, but others are killed before they get the chance to experience their first breath. Abortion is fast becoming a quick fix to a rather large responsibility, especially among teenage women. Having sex is a huge responsibility, and if you arent ready to handle the consequences, then having sex is not for you, and abortion is not the answer if you do get pregnant. There are three basic types of abortion, abortion from above, abortion from below, and drug induced (Abortion TV). The first type, abortion from above is generally called a hysterectomy, which is done late in the pregnancy (Abortion TV). Many babies are still alive when they are removed from the mothers womb, and abortionists have been known to plunge them into buckets of water or smother them with the placenta, while others cut the cord while the baby is still inside to deprive in of oxygen. (Abortions From Below). There are several methods used for an abortion for below, the four most common I will describe. Menstrual extraction, which is done very early, most often before the pregnancy test even comes back positive (Abortion TV). This is just a suctioning of the fetus out of the mothers vagina. The suction method is performed sometime in the first trimester. This baby is torn into pieces as the hose frequently jerks because the baby often becomes lodged. The, scraps are sucked into a bottle (Abortion From Below). The third method is the dilation and evacuation, which is when the abortionist use a tool like pliers to twist and pull parts of the body out as the bones have already been calcified and must be broken (Abortion TV).The final of the abortions from below is called the D X, or partial birth. This is typically done in the advanced stages of pregnancy. What happen is the doctor pulls the baby to where all but the head is out of the woman, then with scissors, cut the babys head open. The brain is removed and the skull collapse and the baby is delivered (Abortion From Below). The last type is drug-induced method, commonly called Candy Apple Babies. This is performed in the first trimester, using a strong salt solution. The solution is injected into the amniotic sac and the baby breathes is the poison. It takes about an hour to kill the baby and the mother delivers the dead baby a day or so after, however some do manage to survive this agonizing attempt to end their lives (Abortion TV).At no time during any of the methods of abortion are the babies given any type of anesthetic to ease the pain. These unborn children feel it each time one their limbs are torn off or when the abortionist stabs the skin off (Abortion TV). Is this fair?Women are often led to believe that just because abortions are legal, they are safe, but in all reality, they are far from safe. Women face injuries to the uterus, cervix, urinary tract, infection, hemorrhage, heart failure, embolism, sterilizations, ruptured intestines and even death (Tribe). In the years of legal abortion in A merica fewer than 10 or the 1,600,000 women undergo legal abortions each year now die as a result of the procedure(Tribe). In addition, there are countless cases of abortionists sexually abusing their clients while under anesthesia (Tribe). In 1996 alone, 1,365,700 abortions were performed (Abortion Statistics). Statistics show that there have been approximately forty million abortions since1973, which is an average of 4000 per day (Abortion Statistics). The most shocking statistic of all is the reason for these abortions. About ninety-five percent of all abortions are done just as another method of birth control, which leads back to the idea that if you cant handle the consequences and responsibilities of having sex then you shouldnt be having sex in the first place (Abortion Statistics). Cry of the Beloved Country is a book about courage. Two of the main characters, James Jarvis and Stephen Kumalo discover new things about their sons. While they both lost many things like relatives and trust, James Jarvis was the more courageous and advanced characters. James Jarvis was able to forgive and move on with the loss of his son and his wife. Jarvis develops in the way that he wants to devote his life to helping the blacks. He even helped Stephen Kumalos town, which was also his hometown. Stephen Kumalo lived a quiet life as the Umfundisi of the solemn town of Ndotsheni. One day he gets a letter which brings him to the city of Johannesburg. While in Johannesburg he finds his sister and discovers that she is an abomination and a disgrace to the Kumalo family. She has a son with no father, worked as a prostitute, and will not put herself together. Stephen Kumalo becomes a very ashamed man for what has become of his family. Kumalo is a man of God so he does not intend to get hung up by this too much. When Kumalo returns to Ndotsheni, he grieves over the loss of his son, but in the end he comes to an inner peace and ties up loose ends with James Jarvis. James Jarvis is an economically rich man who lives on a hill near Ndotsheni. He is a very ignorant man in the beginning who feels that the blacks do not need or deserve help. Jarvis is then crushed when he discovers that his son Arthur Jarvis has been murdered. When James goes to Arthurs house, he reads some of the things the Arthur had written. He always knew that Arthur liked to help the natives, but this was the first time he was seeing Arthurs work. James discovered that Arthur put his life into trying to help improve the lives of the natives. James has an epiphany and sees things the way that his son did. James Jarvis then decides to devote his life to help the natives in Ndotsheni. He sends an agriculture instructor to teach the villages how to farm correctly. He also pays for a new church to be built, and he buys milk for the children of the village. James Jarvis grieves over the loss of his son. He then meets Stephen Kumalo and discovers that it was Kumalos son who murdered Arthur. Jarvis is willing to forgive Kumalo. After a while, James wife dies and he feels that he has nothing left. Jarvis still tries to help Ndotsheni as much as he can. Based on all of what happened, I believe that James Jarvis was the most courageous and developed the most. James Jarvis lost two family members. Although he had not seen his son in a long time and they did not exactly see eye to eye on things, Arthur was still very close to him. James Jarvis overcame these hardships and was even big enough to forgive the family of Absalom, the man who murdered Arthur. He even consoled with Kumalo over the death of his wife because Kumalo felt that Absalom killing Arthur indirectly killed his wife. James also developed during the book from an ignorant man, when it comes to sympathy for the blacks, to a compassionate man who wanted to dedicate his life to helping and improving the lives of the blacks in Ndotsheni. James Jarvis and Stephen Kumalo learn about the lives of their sons throughout the course of this novel. Stephen also finds out that his family is not that of an ideal family. James loses two of his closest family members as well as helps out the village of Ndotsheni. Stephen Kumalo and James Jarvis share a lot of troubles like that of losing a family member, or not knowing what to do, but James Jarvis definitely showed a lot more courage and development in his life during this novel.
